Oscars Barbershop Ruiz was raised in the East Los Angeles hills, and he still finds inspiration in the traditional aesthetics of his youth. A turning point in Oscar’s life occurred while he was living in Los Angeles.

When I was a kid, my dad and uncle would take me to get my hair cut at the barbershop. I’ll never forget the sight of all the barbers dressed to the nines and working on a stage-like platform.

After seeing it, I knew I wanted to be a barber. Oscars Barbershop began developing his skills at a young age, thanks to his three older siblings and a large extended family.

One day, I told my mom about how my dad got a bad haircut at the neighborhood barbershop. I asked whether it was okay if I fixed it, and he said it was. In no time, I was spending every evening out on our front porch, cutting hair.

Oscars Barbershop started to pick up some of the rudimentary skills necessary for the job. Oscar’s goal in life was to become the kind of talented, award-winning barber he is now, and with each careful trim, he drew one step closer to his goal.

After moving to Salt Lake City with his family, Oscar became a skilled barber. Oscar’s wife urged him to go into business for himself after he had gained experience at many local establishments.
